Family of God is celebrating our 40th anniversary as a congregation this Sept. 11th and 12th. It will be a wonderful occasion for giving thanks to God for this faith community. Twenty plus members of Family of God have been busy for over a year planning a wonderful celebration.

Our history has been compiled, detailing our organization and growth. A beautiful booklet of history, photos and remembrances is at the publishers and will be available soon. Family dinners and gatherings of friends are enjoying the many delicious recipes in our cookbook.

The events that are planned are:

Saturday, Sept 11th:

4:30 – 5:30 pm choir rehearsal
4-6 pm open House at Family of God with appetizers and refreshments
6:30 pm Celebration Dinner at Brooklyn Park Community Center with catered meal and entertaining program

Sunday, Sept 12th:

10:00 Festival worship with Rev. Mark Hallonquist preaching (note no Sunday School and only one service that day), with special anniversary offering.

Refreshments and Cake following worship

All of these events should be well worth attending, and should make for a marvelous weekend. A mailing list has been compiled which includes many former members who have moved but will be excited to return to our congregation.

However, please be reminded that we need a head count for the meal Saturday night, which has a $25 per person cost (children’s meals cost less).. It is a wonderful catered meal, and having it at the community center allows us to not have to worry about clean-up, take down, etc. We need to have a head count by Friday, August 27th, so please reserve your tickets by getting them after worship service or by calling the church office . We are hoping for a great crowd! There will be great entertainment with music and pictures taking us down memory lane.

As well with the anniversary, there will be T shirts and sweatshirts available, a full color historical booklet of the congregation, and of course, there are more cookbooks.

The anniversary committee, chaired by Nancy Rhinhart, has worked so hard on all these events, and we owe them a great amount of thanks.

Praise be to God for 40 years of ministry through Family of God Lutheran Church.

What were you doing 40 years ago?

In Brooklyn Park:

• There was nothing north of 85th Avenue but potato fields.
• The average three bedroom home (with a fenced yard) was $30,000.
• Brookdale Drive and Zane Avenue was the location of Gordon’s in the Park, not White Castle.
• Pastor Leroy Pillman was door-knocking the streets and avenues of Brooklyn Park to gather families together in a new mission congregation of the Lutheran Church in America

Things have certainly changed in four decades. A then fledgling church has become a thriving, warm and welcoming part of Brooklyn Park and the surrounding area.

Keep in mind that our 40th Anniversary cookbooks make a wonderful Mother’s/Father’s Day gift (or any other occasion.) Available Sundays or any workday in the church office.

Time Capsule

Our church’s 40th Anniversary celebration is coming in September and it was suggested by the Anniversary Committee we have a time capsule. At the present time, I am working with 9th graders and their mentors on the time capsule. The time capsule will probably include old photographs, the current program and booklet from the 40th anniversary, newspapers (including current events, local and worldwide), DVD’s, and other items suggested by our confirmands. If you have ideas or items that should be put in the time capsule, please let me know and I will present these ideas or items to the group.
