School
Bags & Baby Layettes
School Bags for Lutheran
World Relief will be assembled September 16 at 6:30. Thank
you to all who have contributed school supplies so far. We are
especially in need of blunt scissors as they haven’t been on sale
very often. On Sept. 16 we will meet at 6:30 to fill school bags and
assemble the baby layettes. We also pack them into shipping boxes.
We could use lots of help. We have an assembly line which gets the
job done quickly. These projects have gratefully received funding
from our local Thrivent Northwest Minneapolis Chapter. Hope to
see you there!
Back-to-school sales are in full swing, and again this year the
Social Ministry Committee reminds us that when you see good deals,
please remember that we accept donations of school supplies to fill
Lutheran World Relief school kits for shipping to places in need.
Collection of Family of God begins August 7. Each bag will contain:
3 notebooks (70 count wide or narrow); 12” ruler with inches and
centimeters; 1 pencil sharpener; 6 unsharpened pencils; 1 large
eraser, 1 blunt scissor; 12 sheets construction paper, and 1 box of
crayons (16 or 24). You can get this and other information at the
Lutheran World Relief website: www.lwr.org/beinvolved/schoolkit.asp
Opportunity Fair
~Sunday, October 3
During refreshment time after worship on October 3, you’re invited
to take a few minutes to explore at some interest tables. There will
be sign-ups for volunteer service in the year ahead and for adult
classes and events. Members, visitors, and friends of the
congregation are welcome to stay, ask questions, offer comments, and
consider a commitment that works for you in this new season of
ministry in Christ’s name.
Garage Sale Update
The 2010 Garage Sale is
over!! It was a hard year for all of our faithful volunteers as it
was so hot to be working at the church. A huge thank you to all
members who donated their gently used items for the sale, helped to
organize and price everything, worked the sale, provided food for
workers and last but not least helped with the clean-up. A special
thank you to Nancy Rhinhart for working with the boy’s clothing,
Nancy Bixler for working with the girl’s clothing, Terri
Anderson-Webb for doing a great job in the toy room and to Paul
Zahalan for doing the fencing and reloading of the supplies back
into our two storage sheds. We raised almost $12,000. Our left-over
items were passed on to Crystal Free Church Shelter, Prince of Peace
Coat Drive, CEAP and the Salvation Army. Thanks again to all who
made this sale a huge success.
Minneapolis Crisis Nursery
The
Minneapolis Crisis Nursery provides respite for parents stretched to
the breaking point. Whether due to mental illness, domestic
violence, poverty or difficulty parenting, the Crisis Nursery
provides parents time and services they need to move out of crisis
mode and begin addressing their needs. Meanwhile the children have
time to play, laugh, eat well and sleep soundly.
We
have signed up to provide supper at the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery
located in Golden Valley on six Thursdays. Volunteers report to the
nursery at 4:00, prepare the food, serve it to the kids and staff,
eat, share the meal with the kids, clean up and leave by 6:00 pm.
Our dates are January 14, March 11, May 13, July 8, September 9 and
November 11. Please watch for a sign-up sheet. We need 3-4
volunteers per time. Volunteers must be 12 years or older.
Remaining Dates: September 9 and November 11
